Starting Salary, Benefits and Hours: Beginning salary is $14.65 an hour for 20 hours per week. Fringe benefits package includes State retirement, vacation and sick leave. Work schedule includes night and weekend hours.

General Statement of Job: Under occasional supervision, answers reference and homework-related questions, provides reader's advisory services, checks materials in and out, registers new customers for library cards, and performs general customer service functions at branch library. Reports to the Branch Library Manager.

Minimum Training and Experience: Requires a Bachelor's degree supplemented by one to two years of relevant library experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Previous experience with computers and internet also required. Customer service experience desired.

Under general supervision, performs reference, circulation and general customer services at branch library. Answers general information and homework-related questions from the public; researches reference questions; offers reader’s advisory services; takes orders for inter-library loans; performs information and referral services for patrons; place holds for patrons; assists and trains patrons in the use of the library and its resources; answers complaints; and provides other general and technological assistance to patrons. Reports to the Branch Manager.

Core Tasks: The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Performs circulation services at branch library. Checks materials in and out; registers patrons for library cards and updates customer records; collects fines; maintains a “hold” shelf; sorts materials to be transferred to other library locations, etc.
  • Performs reference services at branch library. Answers general information and homework-related questions from the public; researches reference questions; offers reader’s advisory services; takes orders for inter-library loans; performs information and referral services for patrons; place holds for patrons; assists and trains patrons in the use of the library and its resources; answers complaints; and provides other general and technological assistance to patrons.
  • Coordinates with the Reference Department to ensure that Interlibrary Loans are managed in a timely fashion by contacting customers about the availability of titles and ensuring they are returned to the Reference Department on time.
  • Performs a variety of general patron service functions, including scheduling meeting rooms for use by public organizations; maintaining an outside bookdrop; conducting library tours; providing tax forms; assisting customers with the copier, public access computer, library pc’s and other tools as needed, etc.
  • Sorts daily mail; checks in and places newspapers and periodicals in browsing area. Shelves items; straightens shelves; reads shelves to maintain correct shelf order. Pulls items in poor condition to be considered for weeding. Performs other collection maintenance duties as appropriate.
  • Compiles branch statistics for use in routine reports.
  • Attends meetings, workshops and conferences as appropriate. Serves on various planning committees.
  • Performs computer data entry to record and retrieve various data, access on-line services, and prepare reports and other documents.
  • Keeps the Branch Manager informed of all issues or concerns that require attention.
  • Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including monthly statistics, request forms, purchase requisitions, patron registration forms, time cards, schedules, memos, correspondence, performance appraisals, etc.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as computers, printers, telephone, copier, fax machine, calculator, handtruck, booktruck, bookdrop, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Branch and Department managers, Library Director, department managers and employees, subordinates, volunteers, maintenance staff, repair service persons, patrons, teachers, vendors, programming personalities and speakers, professional peers and the general public.
  • Assists on a regular schedule at the Main Library. Assists in other departments/branch libraries as needed.
  • Sorts gift books; recommends items to be added to the collection and those to be sold at library book sale.
  • Assists with planning, promotion and presentation of special events and projects such as Customer Appreciation Day. Plans and implements promotional displays and decorations. Maintains orderly and attractive facility.
  • Maintains the security and safety of the facility, guests and library personnel. Performs security duties, including but not limited to monitoring alarm system, maintaining order in the Library at all times, controlling facility keys, and securing building at closing, etc. Ensures that all doors are locked and closing procedures have been completed. May remain with children who are awaiting their ride(s) home.


Data Involvement: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

People Involvement: Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.

Involvement with Things: Requires handling or using machines requiring moderate instruction and experience with computers, and software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets or custom applications.


Reasoning Requirements: Requires performing semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems.

Mathematical Requirements: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to utilize mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Language Requirements: Requires ability to read a variety of reference materials, policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, indexes, etc. Requires the ability to prepare routine and statistical reports, budget requests, correspondence, etc. with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

Mental Requirements: Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.


Vocational/Educational Preparation: Requires a Bachelor’s degree supplemented by one to two years of prior library experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Special Certifications and Licenses: Must possess valid state driver’s license.

Experience Requirements: Basic computer competency and the ability to utilize the Internet and a variety of Microsoft office applications required.


Physical and Dexterity Requirements: Requires light work that involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 25 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy. Must be able to lift 25 pounds and meet other physical demands of shelving books and materials, including pushing loaded book trucks; stooping, bending or stretching.

Environmental Hazards: The job risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.

Sensory Requirements: The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.


Judgments and Decisions: Responsible for actions of others, requiring almost constant decisions affecting co-workers, customers, volunteers or others in the general public; works in a moderately fluid environment with guidelines and rules, but frequent variations from the routine.
