Minimum Training and Experience: Requires a junior high school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
Under general supervision, sorts and shelves materials in the children's department. Assists in retrieving materials. Performs a variety of other duties to help to ensure the efficient and effective services to the public. Reports to the Chidren's Manager.
Core Tasks: The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Performs various tasks to assist in maintaining shelving order and material condition for the library; sorts and shelves books and all other materials in appropriate areas of the library; sets aside materials for mending; reads and straightens shelves to ensure that materials are shelved in the correct order; shifts materials on shelves to balance shelf loads and accommodate new materials. Restocks displays.
- Loads, unloads, and transports book carts; empties book return box.
- Assists with special library programs and projects as needed.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as other library staff, patrons, and the general public; informs manager of any concerns or problems within the library.
- Assists patrons in locating specific books or other materials, and with a variety of other requests and problems as needed.
- Performs a variety of clerical and administrative tasks to include making copies, faxing information, completing forms, marking books with identification stickers, discarding books, and related duties as instructed; performs computer data entry to record and retrieve various data.
- May assist with annual inventory.
- Operates a variety of equipment such as computers, printers, copier, telephone, fax machine, book cart, hand truck, book return cart, and related equipment as needed.
- Shares with staff the responsibility for the security and safety of the facility, guests and library personnel. Refers any problems to the library staff.

Data Involvement: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan. Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.
People Involvement: Requires giving information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants.
Involvement with Things: Requires handling or using machines requiring moderate instruction and experience such as computers, and software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets or custom applications.
Reasoning Requirements: Requires performing semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules with occasional problems.
Mathematical Requirements: Requires using addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, sequencing of numbers and letters.
Language Requirements: Requires reading a variety of policy and procedure manuals. Requires the ability to enter data into the computer and prepare forms and correspondence with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
Mental Requirements: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Requires the ability to learn and understand principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information and to understand and implement basic office machinery functions.
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

Physical and Dexterity Requirements: Requires being physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, telephone, calculator, and related office equipment. Work involves sitting, walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 35 pounds.
