Welcome to YCHistory.org
The York County Library of York County, South Carolina, has many valuable resources for local historians and genealogists, including newspaper articles and typed manuscripts. To make them easily accessible to the researcher and to preserve them for future generations, we have digitized many of these items and provided access to them through this website. A Library Services and Technology Act grant through the South Carolina State Library helped to fund this project.

York County Library Digital Collections
The York County Library Digital Collection was created so the databases of YCHistory.org could be accessed and maintained through a single site. This website provides access to the following resources:
-
Newspaper Article, Manuscript, and Church History Database
A database of digitized newspaper articles (many with photographs), manuscripts of family histories, church histories, and centennial celebration pageants.
-
The News and Obituary Index
A newspaper database that indexes selected articles from the York County newspaper collection on microfilm that is held in the Local History Collection of the York County Library.

Fort Mill Slide Show
The Fort Mill Slide Show was originally a 35mm slide show accompanied by narration on a cassette audio tape. The slides, taken by James L. Patterson, were of old photographs of Fort Mill in J.B. Mills personal collection. John B. Mills did the narration on the tape. Harold M. McCallum narrates the last four slides.

These slides were scanned at 3200 dpi as TIF files and retouched using Photoshop to remove some blemishes and to improve contrast, then converted to JPEGs for use in this video. The video was edited by Tony R. McMehan for the York County Library on January 14, 2009.
Technical Notes
The materials were scanned using an Epson Perfection 4180 Photo Scanner. Images were edited in Adobe Photoshop Elements 3. The text document scans were saved as JPEG files with a width of 8 inches, 300 DPI resolution, grayscale color, and maximum quality.

The digitization process was guided by the Western States Dublin Core Metadata Best Practices Version 1.2 and the Western States Digital Imaging Best Practices Version 1.0.
In scanning and editing the text, no changes were made to the text itself. Only adjustments to the contrast and rotation were made to correct errors in photocopying, binding, or scanning the documents. Evidence of library markings and bindings were cropped out when possible. The intent was to provide as clean a copy as possible for ease of reading.
